FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

We help people design products and experiences that are for everyone. We are especially experienced in educational, statistical, and technological consulting. We are experts in universal design and inclusive design, and we have extensive experience thinking about people with disabilities.

Our experts have worked with, consulted for, or collaborated with a wide variety of organizations. This includes Microsoft, the University of Maryland, Pennsylvania Training and Technical Assistance Network (PaTTAN), and many others.

For accessibility with people with disabilities, we start by thinking about the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) and other relevant specifications. These documents are a useful guide, but they are only a starting point, and not applicable everywhere. Past this, the fine details depend on the product and its purpose. Context of use is a key ingredient. Broadly, we design products to have multiple ways to interact with them, and we make materials compatible with standard accessibility technologies, such as screen readers and braille displays.

There are a number of laws that require specific kinds of material to be accessible to individuals with disabilities. Federally, these include the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act. State laws can also require accessibility for materials. For example, Maryland’s SB0617 ‘Equivalent and Nonvisual Access Accountability Act for K-12 Education’ and Colorado’s HB21-1110 ‘Colorado Laws For Persons With Disabilities’ each provide requirements for certain kinds of services, programs, or materials to be accessible. The bottom line is that public entities have a legal obligation to make their content accessible (e.g., people with disabilities should be able to go to school and participate in society). For private entities, accessibility is just good business. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported recently that approximately 70 million people in the U.S. alone report having a disability. That is a lot of customers with a lot of needs and Data11y can help you reach them.
